ABOUT US

Virginia Green Grocer

Virginia Green Grocer is a certified organic farm which produces highly diverse fruits, vegetables and herbs year-round. Many are rare and/or heirloom varieties, selected first and foremost for superior flavor and quality. Vigor, historical relevance, disease resistance and productivity also influence our selection process.

Fusing traditional organic methods with modern "green" technology enables us to have the best of both worlds by enhancing biosustainable agricultural practices and providing a model applicable to both the small family farm and industrial operations. Farm vehicles and personal cars are bio-diesel-capable, as is the greenhouse. We use a drip irrigation system, which incorporates a complex water recycling system including rainwater collection (among other "clean" collection sources), double filtration and ozonation. The large greenhouse plays host to an abundance of wintertime activities, ensuring continuous productivity throughout the year.

Virginia Organic Cooperative

The Virginia Organic Cooperative was developed to provide a much needed, local resource for fellow farmers, gardeners and enthusiasts. Our first year on the farm was spent transforming acres of barren Virginia red clay into nutrient-rich, healthy and well balanced soil.

This past year marked many milestones for our little farm family. This was our first year of full production on both farms. This was the year in which we applied for and received our organic certification. We broadened our venues to include Wholefoods Markets, local restaurants, inns and a grocery store or two. We raised our own chickens, bought a rooster and gained a new-found respect for the egg. We participated in 2 local organic CSA's. We made many new friends, all of whom contributed, in their own way, to our success.

This year (2008) promises to be action packed as well. Our very own CSA will begin in May and run a 20 week course through October. The CSA will officially be part of the VOC, while fully supported by the farm. The Co-op's structure will facilitate rapid yet balanced growth and we hope, in time, to develop working partnerships with fellow farms by involving symbiotic, multi-farm participation. The benefits (consumer/producer/land) of a sustainable, cooperative farming model are great in number and are attainable with relative ease. A small herd of grass-fed Jerseys is growing, and followed by a sizeable flock of pastured, free-range chickens. Get everything you eat from Fauquier!

To all our friends, far and near, we thank you for your well wishes and endless support. As always, our door is open and we invite you to come by, share a story or two and stay awhile.
